How we live His love

"Late have I loved you, Beauty so ancient and so new,
late have I loved you!
Lo, you were within,
but I outside, seeking there for you,
and upon the shapely things you have made
I rushed headlong – I, misshapen.
You were with me, but I was not with you.
They held me back far from you,
those things which would have no being,
were they not in you.
You called, shouted, broke through my deafness;
you flared, blazed, banished my blindness;
you lavished your fragrance, I gasped; and now I pant for you;
I tasted you, and now I hunger and thirst;
you touched me, and I burned for your peace."

We Are God's Reality Show!

Much of the programming on television these days concerns itself with “reality” shows. There are the entertaining ones, such as Dancing with the Stars, contrived ones like The Bachelor, and some that can be downright brutal, such as Survivor and Kid Nation. They purport to present reality but only show us a distorted view of what some producer would like us to believe.

For me, the true reality is only expressed in and through my life in Jesus. How we live His love is more than just attending Mass or praying.

St. Augustine’s prayer helps to bring me back to what I am called to do. It is a reminder that things, “which would have no being were they not in you,” can be detriments to my spiritual life. It is the Creator whom we worship, not the created. It is the one Reality that becomes the center of my life.

“That’s all fine and good,” you might say, “but what about my studies, my work, my family, my children? If it were not for them – aren’t they created things? – I would devote more of my time to prayer; that’s my reality.” That is exactly true and that is why we are called to that higher reality, to life in Jesus. The more we can become like Jesus in our relationships with others, the more our life becomes one of “constant prayer,” not because we are reciting prayers but because we are imitating Christ’s love.

St. Augustine lamented, “Late have I loved you,” but we have the opportunity to experience that love of God now. It is not too late. Let Him heal your deafness and blindness. Let Him satisfy you.

Peace, Blessings, and Joy
